Drone Museum Horie, which is located in the Minamihorie district in Osaka, Japan, is the nation's first UAS museum.
The museum, which officially opened in December 2017, exhibits 16 types of UAS that have been produced in Japan and abroad. The UAS range in size, from an 18-gram palm-sized indoor UAS to a large crop-spraying UAS equipped with a 10-liter tank.
The museum offers visitors the opportunity to learn the history of UAS, from early models that were designed for industrial use to more recent models that can send live video footage to a smartphone. Visitors can test fly the UAS, and purchase the ones that are on sale as well.
The museum is located in a concrete building with a two-story ceiling about 10 meters high, so there is enough space to fly the UAS inside. In addition to the services already offered, the museum also plans to hold safety lectures where visitors can learn how to fly UAS, and learn about areas where UAS are banned under the aviation law.
“I hope people will stop by freely since it is located in Minamihorie — a hub of fancy cafes and boutiques — and become more familiar with drones,” says the head of the museum, Mei Watanabe, via the Japan Times.
An official of Skyasky Co., which is the UAS pilot school that runs Drone Museum Horie, adds, “there are not many places in Japan where people can see and touch drones. We hope to promote them from the Kansai region.”
