Two technology companies, Velodyne Lidar and Dibotics, announced a partnership on July 12, where the two companies will come together to exchange services for each other.

Dibotics, which works with GPS-denied and infrastructure-less navigation, will help Velodyne customers who use 3-D SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) software. Velodyne Lidar, which is known for its light detection and ranging sensors, will help Dibotics improve its technology for the use of Velodyne’s 3-D Lidar sensors. Through this partnership, each company will get a chance to share its strengths and knowledge with the other, according to a Velodyne press release.

While the two companies announced a formal partnership recently, this will not be the first time that Dibotics and Velodyne have worked together. Among their previous collaborations, they have worked together on tasks such as 3-D mapping, drone security zoning and infrastructure surveillance with zones.

Statements from both companies showed each sides’ excitement of making their partnership official.

“We’re eager to work closely with Velodyne Lidar to deliver the best solutions to emerging markets, like real-time drone mapping and mobile robotics applications,” says CEO of Dibotics Raul Bravo. “We have applied our technology to a wide range of application fields in several industry segments all over the world to achieve fully autonomous function, perception-enriched teleoperation or 3-D modelization. This partnership represents the next step in our evolution, and in the maturation of the technology.”

“Dibotics is the pioneer and world leader of a new kind of real-time 3-D SLAM, based on the output of sensors like ours, so teaming up promises to be a boon to both companies, says Erich Smidt, Velodyne Lidar Europe regional director. “Localization and mobile robotics represent major growth opportunities for us and for the industry as a whole, and we see Dibotics as complementing our lidar market leadership.”

Based in Silicon Valley, California, Velodyne Lidar has been around for 30-plus years, while its new partner Dibotics was just created in 2015 and is based in Paris.
