For the first time, autonomous vehicles will be tested on public, trafficked roads in Europe next month, as self-driving Nissan models hit the crowded streets of London.

Nissan has developed these new LEAF model vehicles that have a new technology that allows them to drive on roads without changing lanes.

The U.K. government seems to be fully invested in the new technology, planning to be the leading location for research and development and the manufacturing of such vehicles by 2025.

“We want to see centers, like Nissan’s here in Cranfield, continue to develop, making us a world leader in the development and testing of auto technology so we can anchor the next generation of vehicle manufacturing and its supply chain here in the UK,” says Greg Clark U.K. secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy.

Along with Nissan, Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover are preparing their autonomous technology in the U.K.

The model by Nissan is expected to be on the market in 2020.
