At this week’s Counter Terror Expo in London, ReconRobotics is introducing a new throwable robot to its line up, the Recon Scout XL.
Previewed as a prototype at the 2012 Association for the U.S. Army conference, the 1.4-pound system is similar to the Recon Scout XT and the company’s Throwbots in design — a two-wheel, single-axis system. The law enforcement and military robot gains 0.2 pounds over the Recon Scout XT.
“The environments in which our police and military operate are highly dangerous and are often littered with debris and clothing that can entangle the treads on larger tracked robots,” says Alan Bignall, president and CEO of ReconRobotics. “Our two-wheeled Recon Scout XL is designed to ride over these obstacles, enabling operators to maintain a safe standoff distance as they conduct reconnaissance in these challenging environments.”
The robot, which can record audio and day and nighttime video, can be thrown up to 30 feet and communicate with a operator up to 300 feet away. With the company’s Command Monitoring Station, that stretches to 1,000 feet.
