AUVSI Advocacy Successes in FY 2023 Omnibus

As the industry’s leading advocacy organization, this year AUVSI has diligently advocated for appropriations priorities, across all three domains and in the commercial and defense sectors, to advance and scale the uncrewed systems and robotics industries. AUVSI both adopted our own appropriations priorities and advocated for our members’ own appropriations requests. 

White House Advanced Air Mobility Summit: Takeaways for Industry

On August 3rd, the White House hosted a Summit on Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). While AAM was the focus of the Summit, discussions also centered around more traditional Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) issues, in addition to Counter-UAS issues in light of the Administration’s Counter-UAS Action Plan. AUVSI was honored to be able to attend this historic event and thanks the Biden Administration, and specifically the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), for organizing this Summit and inviting key industry stakeholders to share their views.

AUVSI Statement in Response to NHTSA SGO Data Release

Arlington, Va. - Earlier today, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released data collected under its Standing General Order (SGO), and the information underscores the strong safety record of the autonomous goods movement industry.   Increasing safety is the core mission of every AUVSI member company. 42,915 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2021, a 10% increase over 2020. Vehicle automation technologies, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving Systems (ADS), have the potential to meaningfully increase roadway safety. 

AUVSI's Recent Regulatory Filings in Response to NTSB, DOT Strategic Plans

Recently, AUVSI filed comments in response to requests from two agencies for public input on their proposed strategic plans. Both the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are in the process of updating their strategic plans to guide actions in the coming years, and AUVSI jumped at the opportunity to emphasize the importance of unmanned systems across domains to strengthen and streamline America’s transportation ecosystem and leadership.  

DOT Secretary Buttigieg visits Global Air Drone Academy

On a summer afternoon, a drone flew above the Global Air Drone Academy (GADA) in Baltimore, Maryland – but this time, it wasn’t being flown by a summer camp student learning about drones. This flight was piloted by Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, with the Mayor of Baltimore City, Brandon Scott, and the Academy’s students and mentors in attendance.
