Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 has been tested with a new airborne detect and avoid system in the Netherlands, the company announced Feb. 9.

At a demonstration in Den Helder, the Netherlands Aerospace Centre installed its AirScout detect and avoid system. The Camcopter then took part in scenarios where it unexpectedly encountered other aircraft, including a Dornier Do-228 and an Alouette helicopter, and successfully avoided them.

In addition to the Netherlands Aerospace Centre, the project was also undertaken with the Netherlands air force and coast guard, each of which provided one of the intruder aircraft.

The work is part of the ATM Innovative ARPAS Integration for Coastguard Applications, or AIRICA.

“In the future we hope to use unmanned systems for our search and rescue operations,” says Edwin van der Pol, head of operations for the coast guard. “These trials are important to achieve regulations for bringing RPAS into non-segregated airspace.”
