UPS Flight Forward, Wingcopter partner to develop next-gen package delivery drones

UPS Flight Forward (UPSFF) and German drone-maker Wingcopter are partnering to develop the next generation of package delivery drones for various use cases in the United States and internationally. Wingcopter says that UPS chose it for this collaboration for two reasons: for its UAS technology, and for its track record in delivering a variety of goods over long distances in multiple international settings. “Drone delivery is not a one-size-fits-all operation,” says Bala Ganesh, vice president of the UPS Advanced Technology Group.

Stanford University researchers develop soft robot that can move and change shape

Stanford University researchers have developed a soft robot that borrows features from traditional robotics to stay safe while still retaining the ability to move and change shape. “A significant limitation of most soft robots is that they have to be attached to a bulky air compressor or plugged into a wall, which prevents them from moving,” explains Nathan Usevitch, a graduate student in mechanical engineering at Stanford. “So, we wondered: What if we kept the same amount of air within the robot all the time?”

Altitude Angel, INVOLI partner to provide 'unrivaled picture of airspace' for UAS operations

Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) technology provider Altitude Angel is partnering with low-altitude air traffic data provider INVOLI to provide what they’re describing as “an unrivalled picture of airspace” to ANSPs, operators, pilots and drone-centric risk management applications. After working together informally on a few initiatives, Altitude Angel and INVOLI believe a strategic partnership is beneficial for both of them. Most recently, the companies worked together at the African Drone Forum and Lake Kivu Challenge 2020, where Altitude Angel served as the lead and umbrella UTM provider, while INVOLI delivered its air traffic awareness system and drone tracking platform.

Autonomous Solutions, Phantom Auto help develop fully unmanned yard truck

Autonomous Solutions Inc. (ASI), Phantom Auto, FANUC America Corporation, and Terberg have collaborated to develop a new fully unmanned yard truck platform. “The combination of these four leading companies brings an autonomy solution that has never been more needed in the logistics sector to lower costs and increase safety and efficiency,” says Mel Torrie, founder and CEO of ASI. With ASI’s Mobius software, operators have real-time awareness and control of a fleet of unmanned trucks. Both of these capabilities are driven by ASI’s autonomous vehicle technology.

Momenta, Toyota partner to develop HD maps for autonomous vehicles

Momenta, which is building the “brain” for autonomous driving, has partnered with Toyota to provide automated HD mapping and updates through vision-based technologies. To better serve Chinese customers, the companies will seek to use this joint development to promote the commercialization of Toyota’s Automated Mapping Platform (AMP) in the Chinese market. Momenta’s vision-based, camera-based HD mapping uses low-cost consumer-grade sensor sets, which is made up of camera, GPS, and IMU to automatically generate HD maps with 10-centimeter level relative accuracy by using cutting-edge technologies such as deep-learning based perception and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM).

QUT researchers to use drones to identify wildlife populations in bushfire affected areas

As part of a collaborative project, researchers at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Queensland, Australia will use drones and infrared imaging to identify wildlife populations in bushfire affected areas.
