FAA Announces Creation of New Center of Excellence
With the help of the University of Oklahoma and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the Federal Aviation Administration is opening a new center of excellence called the Air Transportation Center of Excellence for Technical Training and Human Performance. This will be the 13th COE in the country.
The newest center of excellence is expected to be fully operational and conducting expansive research on a variety of educational topics, technologies and teaching strategies within the next few months. A number of members of academia from the universities will take part in the research efforts, including principal investigators, faculty and staff, and students.
“This world-class, public-private partnership will help us focus on the challenges and opportunities of this cutting-edge field of research,” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta on Friday via press release. “We expect this team will help us educate and train aviation professionals well into the future.”
Aside from research, development and technical training will be provided for air traffic controllers, aviation safety inspectors, engineers, pilots and technicians.
After Congress passed the Federal Aviation Administration Research, Engineering and Development Authorization Act of 1990, COEs across the country were set up. Other centers of excellence have addressed issues including UAS, general aviation research and computational modeling of aircraft structures.
