Driverless shuttle project expected to launch in Utah next month
According to KSL.com, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and the Utah Transit Authority have partnered to launch a driverless shuttle pilot project. The shuttle is expected to make its debut the first week of February at the Utah State Capitol.
The project will utilize an EasyMile electric shuttle to transport people from a variety of locations.
The locations have not been released by UDOT as of yet, but UDOT notes that the shuttle will most likely be tested on closed campuses as opposed to busy roads.
“Really, the bottom line here is we really want folks to come out, try it, experience it and give us their opinions on it,” explains Lisa Miller, UDOT’s outreach and growth manager for the Transportation Technology Group.
“We definitely want to make sure this is something the traveling public will accept and adopt.”
The project will be operational for one year.
According to KSL, the UDOT officials that it spoke to hope that the shuttle leads to “improved, efficient and safe transportation” in the state of Utah, especially with the forecasted population growth over the next few decades.
“We know that the population of the state is almost going to double by 2050,” Miller says. “We have to really be innovate and we really have to think of good mobility solutions so we can keep Utah moving.”
