The Volvo Group has established Volvo Autonomous Solutions, a new business area that will accelerate the development, commercialization and sales of autonomous transport platforms.

According to the Volvo Group, this new business area will allow it to meet a growing demand, and ultimately offer customers in segments such as mining, ports and transport between logistics centers, the best possible platforms as a complement to today’s products and services.

“We have experienced a significant increase in inquiries from customers. With the Volvo Group’s wide range of offerings and broad experience of different applications, we have a unique opportunity to offer solutions that meet their specific needs,” says Martin Lundstedt, president and CEO.

“It is a logical next step for us to gather expertise and resources in a new business area with profit and loss responsibility to take autonomous transport solutions to the next level.”

According to the Volvo Group, autonomous transportation platforms are ideal for applications that require large volumes of goods and material to be moved on pre-defined routes, in repetitive flows. When used for these applications, these platforms can give customers value by contributing to improved flexibility, delivery precision and productivity.

No stranger to autonomous transport platforms, the Volvo Group is behind Vera, a self-driving, connected and electric vehicle. During its first assignment, Vera will play an integral role in the transportation of goods from a logistics center to a port terminal in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Additionally, autonomous Volvo FH trucks will be used in commercial operation at the Brønnøy Kalk mine in Norway to transport limestone along a five-kilometer stretch.
