ITT Exelis Wins Air Force GPS Contract

By Danielle Lucey

ITT Exelis has won a $2.15 million contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory to develop a small satellite navigation payload that will augment the GPS program. The initial study period will last 18 months.

"The development of smaller satellites — in terms of size, weight, power and cost — will yield greater affordability for our customers,” says Mark Pisani, vice president and general manager of the Precision Instruments and Positioning, Navigation and Timing Systems division at ITT Exelis Geospatial Systems. “A smaller satellite size will allow for improved launch vehicle selection flexibility.”

ITT Exelis will research ways to make GPS more affordable and sustainable while also reducing the size and power needs.
