Contest provides young Nigerian entrepreneurs inspiration, education to help Africa fly toward drone-enabled future
Public safety. Healthcare. Hunger. These were among the humanitarian challenges that young entrepreneurs targeted recently – perhaps even more passionately than profits – in the 2021 Nigerian Drone Business Competition.
Almost 1,000 aspiring business leaders, ages 16 to 30, entered the contest, representing every state in Africa’s largest nation. The turnout stunned planners, who had feared that a pandemic-necessitated shift from an in-person to a virtual event would stunt participation.
“That just kind of shows you the entrepreneurial spirit that is here in Nigeria,” said Eno Umoh, primary organizer of the competition. “There is a lot of interest in drone technology here, and we want to harness that.”
The Autonomous Future of UAVs
In October 2020, Skydio announced that the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) was granted a first-of-its-kind approval by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct operations beyond visual line of site (BVLOS) for bridge inspections. These inspections are conducted using Skydio Autonomy, an AI-based flight engine that enables operations in obstacle-dense environments and areas without GPS.

The New Hybrid Experience for XPONENTIAL 2021
5 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF XPONENTIAL 2021
XPONENTIAL is a globally-recognized gathering for leaders and users of unmanned technologies. Each year, it brings together thousands of the industry’s top minds—from engineers, to policymakers, to enterprise program managers—to cultivate collaboration, spark new ideas, and design the future of autonomy.
In 2020, XPONENTIAL went fully virtual in response to the global pandemic. This year, after months of careful planning, it’s officially coming back as a two-part, hybrid experience.
Early performance of hydrogen fuel cell prototype has NWUAV looking forward to new wave in drone propulsion
Northwest UAV leaders are excited about early test results for a hydrogen fuel cell prototype that have exceeded expectations and that they hope will herald a trend toward hydrogen-powered propulsion in unmanned flight.
NWUAV, in collaboration with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), is developing the proton-exchange-membrane fuel cell with an eye toward what Chief Technical Officer Jeff Ratcliffe called a growing “middle market” between long-range military drone missions that require internal combustion engines and less demanding military and commercial drone use that tends to rely on battery power.

Red Cat, Fat Shark and Skypersonic complete long distance drone flight remotely
Red Cat Holdings Inc. has announced that Fat Shark, a wholly owned subsidiary, and Skypersonic, the manufacturer of the Skycopter UAV, partnered to complete a long distance drone flight remotely.
During the flight, a pilot located in Orlando, Florida controlled a drone flying in Detroit, Michigan. The flight integrated Fat Shark's new digital technology, "Shark Byte" with Skypersonic's Skycopter and remote pilot software system.

Sagetech Avionics, Kraus Hamdani complete integration of Sagetech's UAV transponders with open source autopilot
Aerospace technology company Sagetech Avionics and UAS technology company Kraus Hamdani have announced that they have completed the integration of Sagetech’s UAV transponders with ArduPilot, a leading open source autopilot.
The new integration was successfully tested onboard the K1000 Ultra Long Endurance (K1000ULE) UAV, which is the world’s longest endurance, fully electric aircraft in its size and weight category.
“We’re thrilled to provide UAV innovators like Kraus Hamdani with reliable, integrated transponders for new platforms,” says Sagetech Avionics CEO Tom Furey.
