Amazon acquires warehouse robotics startup Canvas Technology

According to TechCrunch, Amazon has acquired Canvas Technology, a warehouse robotics startup based in Boulder, Colorado. “We are inspired by Canvas Technology’s innovations, and share a common vision for a future where people work alongside robotics to further improve safety and the workplace experience,” an Amazon spokesperson says in a statement, via TechCrunch. “We look forward to working with Canvas Technology’s fantastic team to keep inventing for customers.”

FLIR Systems invests in global UAS operations company DroneBase

FLIR Systems has made a strategic investment in global UAS operations company DroneBase.  ​Through DroneBase, businesses have access to one of the largest UAS pilot networks.  With this investment, FLIR will be the exclusive provider of thermal product technologies and the official small UAS thermal imaging training provider for the DroneBase enterprise pilot network through the FLIR Infrared Training Center (ITC). “Our investment in DroneBase helps expand the adoption of FLIR thermal imaging technology by putting it in the hands of more pilots who fly drones every day,” says Jim Cannon, president and CEO of FLIR.

Sentient Blue takes top prize of GENIUS NY competition

A team from Italy called Sentient Blue is the winner of the $1 million grand prize from Round Three of the Genius NY accelerator. “We at Sentient Blue are honored to have been selected as the winner of GENIUS NY 2019,” says Saif Akanni, CEO and CTO of Sentient Blue. “This award is a real milestone for Sentient Blue; it will allow us to establish the company in Central New York and accelerate our growth and development.”

AATI acquires unmanned technology service-provider Sky Scape Industries

American Aerospace Technologies Inc. (AATI), a provider of real-time remote sensing and airborne intelligence services for enterprise, has acquired Sky Scape Industries LLC (SSI), a provider of unmanned technology services. According to SSI, its services are widely used by critical infrastructure operators in the electric, water, and oil & gas industries. The company says that it will continue to provide integration services, professional UAS advisory services, and inspection services across the U.S. 

Boston Dynamics acquires robotics company Kinema Systems

Boston Dynamics recently acquired Kinema Systems, a company that uses deep learning technology to enable industrial robotic arms to locate and move boxes on complex pallets. Kinema Systems’ initial product, Kinema Pick, uses a combination of vision sensors and deep learning software to work with commercial robotic arms to move boxes off pallets to conveyors or build stacks of boxes on pallets. With Kinema Systems’ Pick technology, logistics, retail, and manufacturing companies “achieve high rates of box moving with minimal set up or training for both multi-SKU and single-SKU pallets,” Boston Dynamics says.

Triumph Group selected to provide hydraulic system components for MQ-25 unmanned aerial refueling program

Boeing has awarded Triumph Group a contract to supply critical hydraulic system components for the MQ-25 unmanned aerial refueling program. Headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, Triumph Group designs, engineers, manufactures, repairs and overhauls a diverse portfolio of aerospace and defense systems, components and structures. The components for the hydraulic systems used in the landing gear and the aircraft's arresting systems will be provided by Triumph Integrated Systems, which also provides similar content on other Boeing defense aircraft.

Magnesium acquires UAS software provider Cyberhawk

Cyberhawk, a provider of UAS inspections and asset visualization software for energy infrastructure, has announced that it has been acquired by funds advised by Magnesium Capital LLP. According to Cyberhawk, the transaction will provide more growth capital to fund further stages of software development, as well as U.S. expansion. “We are extremely proud to have established a globally renowned reputation and to be relied upon by many of the world’s largest energy companies,” says Cyberhawk CEO Chris Fleming.  

AeroVironment to provide allied nation with its Puma AE II small UAS, training and support

AeroVironment has received a $17,356,084 firm-fixed-price contract to provide an allied nation with its Puma AE II small UAS, training and support. Delivery of the fully man-portable drone is expected by September 2019. Designed for land and maritime operations, the AeroVironment Puma AE can land in water or on land. Equipped with its Mantis i45 sensor suite, the all-environment UAS provides the operator with extended flight time and a level of imaging capability never before available in the small UAS class, according to AeroVironment.

Daimler Trucks acquires majority stake in Torc Robotics in an effort to commercialize highly automated trucks

In an effort to commercialize highly automated trucks (SAE Level 4) on U.S. roads, Daimler AG’s subsidiary Daimler Trucks and Buses Holding Inc. is acquiring a majority stake in Torc Robotics. Torc Robotics' team and Daimler Trucks’ developers, specifically the Research & Development team of Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), will work together closely as part of the overall agreements.

Apex Unmanned and RelmaTech partner to promote benefits of UAS Remote ID and tracking technologies

UAS consulting company Apex Unmanned and technology company RelmaTech have agreed to collaborate on the promotion of the benefits that UAS Remote Identification and tracking technologies can offer. Apex Unmanned and RelmaTech are partners on the Nevada team that NASA recently selected to execute its NASA Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management (UTM) Technical Capability Level (TCL) 4 program. Under the leadership of the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NIAS), the Nevada UAS Test Site was selected to execute TCL4 through a competitive process with six other states.
