Air Canada Cargo to market and sell Drone Delivery Canada's services

Drone Delivery Canada (DDC) has partnered with Air Canada, which will result in Air Canada Cargo using its marketing and sales platforms and resources to market and sell DDC’s drone delivery services in Canada. Under the terms of the agreement, and subject to DDC obtaining required regulatory approvals, DDC will build and operate up to 150,000 drone delivery routes in Canada. These routes will include several components, such as timetables, flight schedules and types of UAS to be deployed.

Local Motors brings global fleet challenge for autonomous shuttle to Atlanta

Local Motors has announced that Atlanta, Georgia will be the next site for its global fleet challenge for the company’s autonomous shuttle, Olli.  The entry window for the challenge opened on Tuesday, June 4, and entries will be accepted through July 31. Once a winner is chosen, engineers from Local Motors will map Olli’s autonomous route. The state of Georgia has been open to the potential of autonomous vehicle technology. Peachtree Corners, an Atlanta suburb, is currently working on its autonomous vehicle test track, and just a few years ago, Georgia’s former governor signed a bill into law that allows self-driving vehicles to operate on public roads.

Boeing has announced an investment in Robotic Skies, a provider of services that connect manufacturers and operators of commercial UAS with a global network of more than 170 civil aviation authority-certified repair stations.

Planck Aerosystems to scale marketing efforts using recently awarded $25,000 voucher

As part of its participation in the inaugural Defense Innovation Voucher Program (DIV) Grand Prize Pitch, Planck Aerosystems, a developer of specialized drone technology, was awarded a $25,000 voucher. Based on their accomplishments, goals and overall involvement in the program, five DIV companies were chosen to participate in the DIV Grand Prize Pitch. Planck Aerosystems was selected as the winner by a live voting audience and a panel of judges. The other four finalists were EpiSci (EpiSys Science Inc.), Fuse Integration, Inc., GET Engineering Corporation and Trabus Technologies.

BAE Systems purchases key assets of Riptide Autonomous Solutions

BAE Systems Inc. has purchased the key assets of Riptide Autonomous Solutions, which develops affordable UUV technology and platforms. With a specialty in small UUVs, Riptide’s UUVs are described as “sophisticated yet simple, efficient, and highly flexible,” and offer “performance discriminators within this domain” that include greater depth, range, endurance, and speed. “Adding Riptide's technological capabilities will position us to provide customers unmatched flexibility by offering a family of UUVs and integrated payload solutions capable of supporting a variety of critical missions,” says Terry Crimmins, president of BAE Systems Electronic Systems.

Airbus Aerial, Swiss Re Corporate Solutions partner to help companies identify flood risks using UAS

Airbus Aerial and Swiss Re Corporate Solutions are partnering to help companies efficiently identify flood risks and more accurately predict weather-related flood damage. Through the collaboration, Airbus Aerial’s drone imagery and data will power FLOAT, the flood assessment tool of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions. “We are very excited to announce our collaboration with a global leader in the commercial insurance market, and to be able to offer this unique solution to Swiss Re Corporate Solutions’ clients around the world,” says Jesse Kallman, president of Airbus Aerial, from the company’s Atlanta headquarters.

Cape, Tijuana Public Safety Department launch Mexico's first Drone as a First Responder program

Cape and the Tijuana Public Safety Department have partnered to launched Mexico’s first Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program. Through the program, two UAS equipped with the Cape Aerial Telepresence platform will be utilized as part of the department’s daily operations to provide access to real-time aerial visibility and intelligence for officer support in both the command center and the field. During the program, Cape-enabled UAS will support emergency response efforts within a three-kilometer radius of the Tijuana Public Safety Department headquarters. The focus will be on “improving both operational efficiency and the safety of both first responders and the greater Tijuana community,” the entities say.

From Unmanned Systems magazine: Drones offer safe, efficient tool for insurance companies

Over the years, drones have proven to be extremely beneficial for the insurance sector, offering safe and efficient tools for companies to use during various tasks.  In 2014, State Farm — a pioneer in the insurance sector for using this technology — began looking at how to use drones for claims. Just a few short years later in Aug. 2017, the company began using drones for real-life claims and hasn’t looked back.  “They’ve definitely provided a tool that we did not necessarily have in the past,” drone pilot Jared Brose tells Unmanned Systems. “They allow us to get out there and get in the air as quickly as possible and handle a claim as quickly as possible.”

Ford, Agility Robotics partner to get deliveries from self-driving vehicles to the door using robotics

Ford has partnered with Agility Robotics to help self-driving vehicles complete the final step of getting a delivery from the car to a customer’s door using robotics. Through its pilot programs, Ford has learned that it’s not always convenient for people to leave their homes to retrieve deliveries or for businesses to run their own delivery services.
