Newly established Volvo Autonomous Solutions to accelerate development of autonomous transport platforms

The Volvo Group has established Volvo Autonomous Solutions, a new business area that will accelerate the development, commercialization and sales of autonomous transport platforms. According to the Volvo Group, this new business area will allow it to meet a growing demand, and ultimately offer customers in segments such as mining, ports and transport between logistics centers, the best possible platforms as a complement to today’s products and services.

Realtime Robotics to use funding to accelerate development of more commercial product releases

Realtime Robotics, the developer of responsive motion planning for industrial robots and autonomous vehicles, has raised $11.7 million in Series A funding. This capital will be used for several efforts, including accelerating the development of more commercial product releases, and growing the Realtime Robotics team to support key customers and partners across the world. “The commitment garnered from strategic investors reflects both the need and the demand for smarter robots,” says Peter Howard, CEO, Realtime Robotics.

Mayflower Autonomous Ship to utilize IBM AI and other tech to autonomously cross Atlantic

Led by marine research organization ProMare, a global consortium of partners is building an unmanned, fully-autonomous ship that will cross the Atlantic on the fourth centenary of the original Mayflower voyage in September 2020. IBM has joined that consortium, and the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) will utilize IBM’s artificial intelligence (AI), most powerful servers, cloud and edge computing technologies to autonomously navigate and avoid ocean hazards as it travels from Plymouth, England to Plymouth, Massachusetts. If the voyage proves successful, MAS will be one of the first self-navigating, full-sized vessels to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

Florida Polytechnic University awarded grant to develop simulation facility for connected and autonomous vehicles

Thanks to a $350,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, Florida Polytechnic University will develop a large-scale Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation facility for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), which it expects to be operational by the beginning of the spring semester in 2020. According to Florida Polytechnic, HiL simulation is a “robust gateway” for the development and testing of complex real-time embedded systems. “I thank the National Science Foundation for their support of Florida Polytechnic University’s research and development of autonomous vehicle technology,” says Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Einride to use latest funding to support organizational growth and continued investment in its software platform

Autonomous transport provider Einride has raised $25 million in a Series A round. The company will use the funding to support both organizational growth and continued investments in its software platform. The funding will also be used to further international expansion, which will allow the company to continue building demand for sustainable transport and delivering on its growing number of customer contracts with entities such as logistics provider DB Schenker, supermarket chain Lidl and transport intensive companies based in the U.S.

With a goal of making fully self-driving vehicles a reality, the new Autonomous Vehicle Computing Consortium (AVCC) officially launched this week during Arm TechCon in San Jose.  Featuring industry leaders from automotive, automotive supply, semiconductor and computing such as Arm, DENSO, General Motors, NVIDIA, and NXP Semiconductors, AVCC look will to serve as the leading organization for autonomous computing expertise, and help solve some of the greatest challenges associated with deploying self-driving vehicles at scale.

Self-driving vehicle startup DeepRoute raises $50 million in funding

Self-driving vehicle startup DeepRoute has raised $50 million in its pre-Series A funding round to expand the global presence of its autonomous driving technologies. With the funds, DeepRoute will be able to accelerate the research and development of autonomous technologies for passenger vehicles. “Our team is very excited about the most recent round of funding we have received and how these funds will help further the advancement of autonomous vehicles on our roads,” says Shuang Gao, chief operating officer of DeepRoute.

Optimus Ride showcases self-driving shuttles at Reston, Virginia's Halley Rise

During the groundbreaking of Halley Rise, a new $1.4 billion mixed-use district in Reston, Virginia, on Monday, Oct. 7, self-driving vehicle tech company Optimus Ride showcased its self-driving shuttles and provided attendees with a chance to experience the technology firsthand. Global real estate services company Brookfield Properties selected Optimus Ride to provide “safe, efficient, autonomous transportation” to Halley Rise office tenants traveling within the campus. In just five weeks of its service being in effect at Halley Rise, Optimus Ride has already provided 15,000 rides using its autonomous vehicles.
