Innovation Challenge to put startups before exclusive audience

AUVSI’s Innovation Challenge, which will be part of Unmanned Systems — Defense. Protection. Security (USDPS) will allow companies to pitch their technology to the show’s audience and a high-level advisory panel.   It’s an opportunity for small, start-up and early-stage companies operating in the commercial, defense, and non-traditional unmanned systems or autonomous systems spheres to present their technology to government and industry representatives.   Advisory Panel members include Orin Hoffman, autonomy and robotics HQE, DIUx; Bob Sadowski, chief roboticist, U.S. Army; Frank Kelley, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for Unmanned Systems (DASN (UxS)); and other defense and government industry experts.

Autonomous vehicle could turn into 'Batmobile' through Intel and Warner Bros. collaboration

During the Los Angeles Auto Show on Nov. 29, Intel announced a collaboration with motion pictures/entertainment company Warner Bros. to develop “in-cabin, immersive experiences in autonomous vehicle (AV) settings.” Intel CEO Brian Krzanich says that the companies are creating the AV Entertainment Experience, which is a “first-of-its-kind proof-of-concept car to demonstrate what entertainment in the vehicle could look like in the future.” The vehicle, which is a member of the Intel 100-car test fleet, will demonstrate the potential for entertainment in the world of autonomous driving.

Navya's driverless vehicles to be tested in Western Australia

According to the West Australian, the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia (RAC), in partnership with Navya, will test driverless passenger vehicles as a part of a trial expected to begin next year. Several of Navya’s driverless passenger Autonom vehicles will be tested during the trial. The vehicles are designed to operate as an on-demand shared mobility service that can be booked through a smartphone app. The trial will take place in Perth, Western Australia, which is one of three cities in the world selected for the trial of these vehicles.

Lyft receives permit to test autonomous vehicles in California

According to Reuters, U.S. ride-hailing firm Lyft has obtained a permit to test autonomous vehicles in the state of California. The permit comes two months after Lyft announced plans to offer a self-driving car as a ride option in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is where the company is headquartered. In an effort to advance its self-driving strategy, Lyft has formed partnerships with several autonomous car companies. Earlier this year, Lyft struck a research collaboration with Alphabet unit Waymo.

DJI seeking partners for UAS Integration Pilot Program

DJI is looking to partner with state, local and tribal governments that are applying to take part in the FAA’s recently launched UAS Integration Pilot Program, which will provide opportunities for government and industry to experiment with advanced UAS operations and test new forms of airspace management. ​Governments that are interested in participating in the UAS Integration Pilot Program have been asked by the FAA to work with UAS operators and manufacturers in their applications to be part of the pilot program. With this in mind, DJI is inviting those governments to consider partnering with DJI, so that the “expertise and collaborative vitality” of their programs can be enhanced.

This Week in the Unmanned Systems and Robotics World Tesla has unveiled its fully electric semitruck, which is expected to go into production in 2019. The semitruck is equipped with Enhanced Autopilot, the second generation of Tesla's semiautonomous technology, giving it several autonomous capabilities, including automatic braking, lane keeping, and lane departure warnings. Expert Drones and Marriott International to bring drone racing to W Fort Lauderdale Hotel

On Nov. 28, Expert Drones and Marriott International will bring drone racing to W Hotels through an event called “Drone Dash.” ​Drone Dash will bring the world of drone racing to the hotel space, as the “immersive drone race” will take place inside and outside the property of the newly renovated W Fort Lauderdale Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “Drone technology is being utilized in a variety of different ways, but never before like this,” says Brett Velicovich, Managing Partner of Expert Drones.

PAE ISR's Resolute Eagle UAS completes first commercial airspace flight

On Nov. 8, PAE ISR’s Resolute Eagle UAS completed its first commercial airspace flight. The flight took place at the Pan-Pacific UAS Test Range—located at Pendleton Airport in Oregon—operating under a FAA Certificate of Waiver or Authorization. “This event signifies PAE ISR’s ability to successfully fulfill U.S. commercial and civilian requirements in addition to U.S. military missions,” says Chico Moline, President of PAE ISR.  “We are excited by this achievement as it represents our ability to offer our dynamic platform to a broader customer set.”
