Chairman Reed Calls for More UMS
The Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee recently called for an increased focus on the development of unmanned maritime vessels to strengthen our nation’s armed forces, and AUVSI urges fellow lawmakers and national security officials to take note.
Democratic Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed spoke during a virtual Ronald Reagan Institute event on May 11th, during which he emphasized the importance of technologically evolved ships over merely large numbers of traditional vessels.
The New Hybrid Experience for XPONENTIAL 2021
5 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF XPONENTIAL 2021
XPONENTIAL is a globally-recognized gathering for leaders and users of unmanned technologies. Each year, it brings together thousands of the industry’s top minds—from engineers, to policymakers, to enterprise program managers—to cultivate collaboration, spark new ideas, and design the future of autonomy.
In 2020, XPONENTIAL went fully virtual in response to the global pandemic. This year, after months of careful planning, it’s officially coming back as a two-part, hybrid experience.
Congratulations to General Austin on his Confirmation as U.S. Secretary of Defense
This morning, retired Army General Lloyd Austin was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Defense, and AUVSI offers him and his family our warm congratulations.
Secretary Austin comes to the job with a very impressive resume, marked by several key accomplishments: he was the first Black commander of CENTCOM, the first Black Vice Chief of Staff for the Army, and is now the first Black Secretary of Defense. While serving in the Army, Sec. Austin led every Army formation from platoon-sized elements to a full combatant command, and as a brigadier general deployed to Iraq in 2003, he famously carried an M4 service rifle instead of the traditional general’s service weapon.
General Dynamics Mission Systems awarded $13.5 million contract for Knifefish SMCM UUV
General Dynamics Mission Systems was recently awarded a $13.5 million cost-plus fixed-fee and cost-only modification to continue its engineering support, development, test, and production of the Knifefish Surface Mine Countermeasure (SMCM) UUV.
A modification to the original contract, this award brings the post-milestone C phase of the effort to $62.1 million since Sept. 2019.
A medium class mine countermeasure UUV, Knifefish SMCM is designed to be deployed from the Navy's Littoral Combat Ship and other Navy vessels of opportunity. The UUV will operate within minefields as an off-board sensor while the host ship stays outside the minefield boundaries to reduce risk to personnel.

Oscilla Power to further develop tech that enables AUVs to recharge themselves using ocean waves
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded Oscilla Power Inc., a company focused on developing advanced technology to extract energy from ocean waves, a $200,000 grant to further develop technology that enables AUVs to recharge themselves using ocean waves.
Through their Rotary and Mission Systems group, Oscilla Power will work with Lockheed Martin during this Small Business Innovation and Research (SBIR) project to explore how they can equip their AUV and UUV systems with this capability.

A rising tide lifts all boats is more than an aphorism for AUVSI’s Maritime Advocacy Committee (MAC), which today celebrates its two-year anniversary.
