GA-ASI, U.S. Army partner to enhance the capabilities and survivability of GE-ER UAS

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) has partnered with the U.S. Army to enhance the capabilities and survivability of the MQ-1C ER Gray Eagle Extended Range (GE-ER) UAS. GA-ASI has been awarded several contracts from the Army to upgrade the Gray Eagle ER’s avionics, datalinks and software, to ultimately improve the operational capability of the UAS in contested environments. According to GA-ASI, the modernization initiative provides an “open architecture concept” on the aircraft that is capable of hosting government-owned software, as well as increased autonomy that is needed to support Scalable Control Interface, and the rapid integration of long-range sensors.

AFRL successfully completes initial flight tests for Ultra Long Endurance Aircraft Platform

The Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Center for Rapid Innovation (CRI) recently successfully completed initial flight tests for the Ultra Long Endurance Aircraft Platform (Ultra LEAP). The UAS has a customizable suite of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) tools that supports extended missions. After a series of flight tests that began in Feb. 2019 at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, a two and a half-day continuous flight demonstration was performed from Dec. 9 to Dec 11. Future flight tests will demonstrate increased levels of flight endurance, AFRL says.

MiLA Capital invests in 'tech you can touch' including drone delivery company DASH Systems

Commercial UAS delivery company DASH Systems designs, manufactures and deploys low-cost one-way delivery UAS that operate in today's air logistics network. A portfolio company at Los Angeles-based Venture Capital (VC) firm MiLA Capital, DASH Systems created a platform that enables goods to be delivered without landing an aircraft following the runway/infrastructure issue in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico two years ago, which made providing aid to the Caribbean island and unincorporated U.S. territory difficult. Capable of being mounted to any commercial aircraft, helicopter or UAS, DASH Systems’ delivery UAS enable fast and rapid deployment into any environment.

Sonardyne-led team demonstrates benefits of USVs/AUVs for long-endurance underwater navigation missions

A joint project led by Sonardyne International Ltd., with partners the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and L3Harris, has set “new standards in long-endurance underwater navigation and automated subsea positioning,” according to the entities. One of the main goals of the two-year, £1.4 million Precise Positioning for Persistent Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (P3AUV) project was to integrate existing and emerging technologies to deliver a “step-change” in unmanned platform endurance and navigational precision. The project also sought to use USVs to increase the use of autonomy in offshore survey positioning operations, which ultimately reduces risk to personnel, environmental impact and operating costs.

Altitude Angel to provide Netherlands' ANSP with its first nationwide UTM platform

Following an open and competitive tender process, Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) technology provider Altitude Angel has been awarded the contract to provide Netherlands’ Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland (LVNL), with its first nationwide UTM platform. Altitude Angel says that the technically advanced, nationwide, UTM platform that it is providing the Netherlands will serve as the foundation for the safe integration of UAS, helping to further increase the use of this technology in Dutch airspace for years to come.
